KANNAPOLIS - Obakunle Akinlana wants to teach local schoolchildren the value of respect through the power of a few colored beads. “Stand up straight and say your name loudly,” commanded Akinlana as he presented a beaded necklace to Rashiem Davis, a fourth-grader at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.

WASHINGTON — Surgeon General Richard Carmona said Tuesday that he suffered respiratory problems while growing up in Harlem. His parents, Puerto Rican immigrants, smoked constantly and did not recognize the potentially harmful effects, he said.

As my daughter and I strolled the Champ de Mars, the large park at the foot of Paris' Eiffel Tower, last week, I couldn't help noticing the dogs. We saw all shapes and sizes of Parisian pooches -- although I don't remember seeing a single poodle -- unleashed, walking, sniffing and chasing other dogs.
